This weekend’s Monster Energy® AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, race at Las Vegas’ Sam Boyd Stadium will crown the 2008 AMA Supercross class champion as well as the Dave Coombs Sr. East/West Shootout winner. Team San Manuel Yamaha’s Chad Reed, of Tampa, Fla., holds a 10-point lead over Torco Fuels Honda’s Kevin Windham, of Centerville, Miss., as the championship heads into the final race of the season.
Windham, who has four wins on the season, moved within 10 points of championship leader Reed with an impressive win in Seattle last weekend. This weekend the season’s championship will be decided between these two world-class competitors at Sam Boyd Stadium. Reed has eight wins on the season but is struggling with a shoulder injury to hold onto his points lead.Last weekend in Seattle, Windham, who was leading the race, suffered a mechanical malfunction when a banner got tied up in his back wheel. He stopped his bike and removed the banner from the rear wheel, dropping back to sixth place. Windham charged back through the field and re-captured the lead on lap 17. Reed charged his way to second place with a last-lap pass on Short.
“We are going into Las Vegas with high hopes, and I hope lady luck is with me,” said Windham. “It has been a great year for me. The closer this championship gets to the end, the hungrier I get, so this weekend will be a big race for me. I am fired up right now!”
